Your data, clearly explained
Privacy Policy
Cellar ("Cellar," "we," "us") helps you catalog the wine and spirits you own, learn about them with an AI assistant, and share your collection with friends. This policy explains what we collect, why, and who processes it.
The short version
- You choose what to add to your collection and what to share with friends.
- Scans and questions are processed by our servers and AI providers to return results.
- Photos taken in Cellar are retained until you delete your account.
- We do not sell your personal information.
This summary is for convenience. The complete policy below controls.
Information you give us
- Account details. Your email address, used to create and sign in to your account. Sign-in is handled by our authentication provider, Clerk.
- Date of birth. Collected once to verify you are 21 or older. We store it to enforce the age requirement.
- Profile. A display name and an optional taste profile or knowledge level you set to personalize the app.
- Your collection. The bottles you add, tasting notes and ratings, wishlist items, and the photos you take of bottles, labels, shelves, or receipts.
- Social activity. If you use friends features: your friend code, connections, collection-sharing setting, and any likes or comments you leave.
- Messages. Questions you send to the in-app AI assistant ("Adam") and any feedback you submit.
Information collected automatically
- Usage analytics. We use PostHog to understand how the app is used—for example which screens are viewed, when a scan happens, and when a purchase link is tapped—along with basic device and app-version information. This helps us improve the product.
- Invite code. The code you used to join, so we understand which group you came from.
How photos and AI work
When you scan a bottle, label, shelf, or receipt, the image is sent to our servers and to our AI provider (Anthropic and/or OpenAI) to identify the bottles and generate details about them. When you chat with Adam, your message and relevant context from your collection are sent to the AI provider to produce a response. These providers process the data to return a result; we do not use your content to train their models beyond what their standard API terms provide.
We retain the photos you take within Cellar—including earlier versions you later replace—using our hosting infrastructure, and may use them to improve Cellar's bottle recognition and build our internal reference library of bottle images. These photos are not sold or shared for advertising, and they are deleted when you delete your account.
How we use your information

- To operate friends and sharing features you choose to use.
- To enforce the 21+ age requirement.
- To understand usage, fix problems, and improve the app.
- To respond to your feedback and support requests.

Purchase links
The app links to third-party retailers (for example Spruce D'Vine, Instacart, and Wine-Searcher). When you tap a purchase link you leave Cellar and their own privacy policies apply. Cellar may earn a commission on some purchases.
Your controls and data deletion
You can edit your profile and control whether friends can view your collection from within the app. You can delete your account and all of your data at any time from the app—open the Profile tab and tap Delete Account at the bottom. This permanently removes your collection, tastings, wishlist, friends, photos, and profile. You can also email support@drinkcellar.app and we will delete it for you.
Data retention
We keep your information for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, we remove your personal data from our systems, except where we must retain limited records to comply with law.
Children
Cellar is intended only for adults of legal drinking age (21+ in the United States). It is not directed to anyone under that age, and we do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this policy we will update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
